Providing the skills and confidence to cycle to school

Hull is the country’s top location for the delivery of cycle training to children, according to figures from The Bikeability Trust.

Between April 2024 and March 2025, 99% of Year 6 pupils in the city received either Level 1 and 2 or Level 2 Bikeability training (3,361 children, in total), putting Hull in top spot, ahead of -

  • Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council
  • Rutland County Council
  • Lancashire County Council
  • Plymouth City Council
  • North East Lincolnshire Council
  • Kirklees Council
  • North Lincolnshire Council
  • Wakefield Metropolitan District Council
  • Shropshire Council

Since taking over full delivery of all Bikeability training in the city, the council has taken additional steps to reduce cancellations and increase participation and has also rolled out training to all primary schools in the city.

The council’s training providers, QTS and First Step Cycle, also run catch-up sessions for pupils and support those children in the city who are home educated.
