Hull City Council offers a variety of support and initiatives for schools to encourage more active ways of doing the school run, such as walking or cycling.
The road safety team at Hull City Council helps people across the city change how they travel. This includes children, parents and carers and school staff.
Here are some of the ways they’ve been able to help -
- WOW (Living Streets) - children record how they get to school using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker. If they travel sustainably (walk, wheel, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge
- Modeshift STARS (Education) - helping schools think through their travel issues and opportunities and what actions could make a difference. Some schools write school travel plans and the council can help them secure accreditation
- help set up initiatives like ‘park and stride’ sites, walking buses or car sharing
- engaging with children about their travel choices, for example, at assemblies
- linking with other council teams to think about solutions, for example, to parking problems outside the school gates
Schools might have an 'Active Travel Champion' who the council could support with such initiatives.
Whether you want to help improve the environment, reduce congestion or improve you or your child’s health or perhaps you want to address other issues, such as unsafe parking outside the school gates. The council can help. Just contact RoadSafety@hullcc.gov.uk
