As part of the major investment to improve the Stoneferry Road corridor, the council installed 5 cycle active safety warning sites.
In a UK first, the council, working with leading highway and transport technological solutions expert, Clearview Intelligence, installed ‘intelligent road studs’ to help improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and encourage more people to consider active and sustainable travel options.
The studs, which are located at the top of each intersection with Stoneferry Road, are connected to a system that detects a cyclist’s approach. This then activates the studs, which illuminate and flash to warn motorists, which aligns to changes to the Highway Code, which gives priority to vulnerable users crossing a side road over vehicles leaving the main flow of traffic.
