Connecting our Communities

Each year, the council develops a programme of works to improve the city’s footways and futureproof key walking routes around the city and in residential areas all over Hull.

For 2025/2026, these works will consist of 58 schemes covering 23,000m2, comprising either -

  • full footway reconstruction
  • plaining and resurfacing
  • retreading/recycling

A proactive programme of slurry sealing is also undertaken annually.

Slurry sealing consists of applying a thin layer of slurry made up of -

  • bitumen
  • emulsion
  • aggregate

to the existing footpath surface. This process seals the footpath surface, protecting it from water damage. The material fills minor cracks and shallow defects whilst also helping to level uneven areas.

This year’s work covers 15,000m2 across 15 schemes at locations all around the city.

In addition to its planned proactive schemes, the council also delivers footpath repairs and maintenance in locations that form part of the council’s housing stock, as well as ad hoc requests for footpaths identified by area teams through the Love Your Neighbourhood initiative.
