There is a network of 17 electronic variable message signs (VMS) across the city, located primarily on strategic routes in and out of the city, such as -
- Anlaby Road
- Beverley Road
- Boothferry Road
- Cottingham Road
- Holderness Road
- Spring Bank
- Stoneferry Road
- Willerby Road
These signs are used to display a variety of public information throughout the day, including -
- bus lane operation times
- live city centre car park space availability
- safe driving prompts.
In addition to pre-prepared messages, the council can also use the VMS network to warn and inform drivers and members of travelling public about roadworks, events, incidents and diversion routes.
A replacement programme across the VMS network is nearing completion.
This upgrade will enhance the capability of the signs and allow the council to display more dynamic messaging with graphics.

Real Time Journey Information Signs
In addition to the VMS network, the city also has 18 real-time journey information signs.
These signs display journey time information between the sign location and predicted destination waypoints on Hull City Council’s highway network.
Installed off the back of the Stoneferry Corridor Improvement Scheme and as part of the National Highways A63 mitigation measures, the signs were introduced to advise the public of expected journey times across certain areas of Hull.
The signs update journey times every 5 minutes, and the system uses INRIX data to provide accuracy.
INRIX collate data from various sources, including mobile phone triggers, Google maps and other others, to provide accurate and reliable data.
These signs can also be used to display other strategic messaging, if required.
Over Height Vehicle Detection Sites
Hull has 5 of these sites, installed as part of the Stoneferry Road Improvement Scheme, which were introduced as a measure to prevent Stoneferry Rail Bridge from unwanted strikes and collisions from high-sided vehicles.
These are supplementary devices over and above the legal requirement, which were seen as a positive to drive down incidents.
The 5 locations are at key waypoints on the network, strategically placed to allow vehicles that trigger the warning signs the opportunity to turn around and find an alternative route that would suit their vehicle.
Three locations are on Cleveland Street, near the energy works, the A1033 Mount Pleasant, Point Access Industrial park exit onto Mount Pleasant, Chamberlain Road and Stoneferry Road near Lorraine Street.
Each site has specialist height detection triggers, which are calibrated to the same height as the bridge limit.
When triggered by a vehicle or object travelling in the direction of the bridge, a warning sign will flash up on an electronic sign located after the detection point.
