To support motorists, the council has 23 specially dedicated car park guidance signs across the city, which advise the public on car park space availability across multiple locations.
The signs serve 9 city centre car parks, showing availability at -

- Francis Street
- George Street
- Market Place
- Osborne Street
- Princes Quay
- Prospect Centre
- Pryme Street
- St Stephens
The car park guidance works by dividing the city centre into five, colour-coded zones -
- City Centre North
- Old Town
- Princes Quay
- Prospect
- St Stephens
From further outside the city centre, the signs show availability across the whole zone, and as drivers get closer to the city centre, the zones are broken down to show values of available spaces in each car park within that zone.
Car park counts are updated digitally via physical barrier counts or loops in the car parks. Counts are taken every 5 minutes, and the signs are updated accordingly.
During certain times of the day, the car park space availability numbers are also pushed out to drivers through the council’s network of variable message signs.
